Alex Ritchie is an American actor who plays the role of Horace M. Derwent in the 2016 operatic version of The Shining.
Biography[]
Dubbed “very entertaining” (Cherry and Spoon), baritone Alex Ritchie has performed on numerous Twin Cities stages including Minnesota Opera, Skylark Opera, Minnesota Concert Opera, Mill City Summer Opera, the MacPhail Center for Music and Theatre in the Round.
With Minnesota Opera, Mr. Ritchie was seen most recently in as Lakai in Ariadne auf Naxos, Sid in La fanciulla del West, the Yes Man in The Dream of Valentino and Polonius in Hamlet. He has also been avidly involved in workshops with the New Works Initiative, helping prepare world premieres including Doubt and The Manchurian Candidate.
In 2015, he performed The Corporal in Mill City Summer Opera’s La fille du régiment. On the theatrical stage, Alex was most recently seen as Sullen in Theatre in the Round’s 2014 production of The Beaux’ Stratagem. He also portrayed the Pooh-Bah for Skylark Opera’s 2013 production of The Mikado, a collaboration with Mu Performing Arts.
Mr. Ritchie is a 2012 Masters alumnus of the University of Missouri – Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, where he performed Escamillo in La tragédie de Carmen, Il conte in Le nozze di Figaro and Leporello in Don Giovanni. In 2011, he was a young artist at Seagle Music Colony, performing Crespel in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance and covering Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte.
In March, Mr. Ritchie joined the Saint Cloud Symphony Orchestra as the baritone soloist in Fauré’s Requiem. An Arkansas native, Mr. Ritchie earned his Bachelor of Arts from Harding University, where he returned in April as the featured baritone in Ein deutsches Requiem. He currently resides in Cottage Grove, where he is a voice instructor at A# Music Studios.
