Jack's Mother refers to the mother of Jack Torrance in the 1977 Stephen King novel The Shining.
Biography[]
The Shining (book)[]
Jack's mother isn't named, and Jack doesn't express love for her.
He dreamt about when he was younger when realized that his mother only stayed with his father because her Catholic religion demanded it. Jack’s own love for his father began to suffer when he was a 9-year-old after witnessing his father savagely beat his mother with his cane at the supper table in front of the whole family for no reason at all. He was yelling at her, “Now. Now by Christ, I guess you’ll take your medicine now.” His father toke his injured mother to the same hospital his father worked at as a nurse and she backs up her husband's lie – that her injuries are from a fall down the stairs.
After her husband dies, she received a large life insurance payment.
Unlike Wendy, she's entirely passive and, apparently, does nothing to shield herself or her children from abuse. She's a tragic figure who doesn't seem to have a voice at all.
