Roger/Lewis Toner is a minor posthumous antagonist in the The Shining novel and its miniseries adaptation.

Main Events

In the novel, Roger is the homosexual lover of Overlook Hotel owner Horace M. Derwent, who is bisexual. Roger is deeply infatuated with him, though Derwent is emotionally and verbally abusive towards him. According to the ghost woman Jack dances with in the ball, the two spent a weekend in Cuba together before the story. Roger fell in love with him in 1939 and began following him, though Derwent doesn't go back to his male lovers, as the ghost woman notes. However, Derwent told him that he would reconsider if Roger came to the ball dressed like a "dumb bitch" (as the ghost woman puts it).

On December 1st, Danny encounters Roger's ghost in the hallway. Roger's cheeks, chin, and mouth are covered in blood. He barks and growls at Danny, and threatens to "eat him" - starting with his "plump little cock." Danny then runs back into the hallway to the Torrences' rooms, where he hears Roger yelling for Derwent to "get it up" and how he knows what Derwent likes. He then yells "I'll huff... and I'll puff... until Harry Derwent's all bloowwwwn down!!" then ending with a long howl then turned into "a scream of rage and pain." Roger's ghost then disappears.

The next day, Jack witnesses Derwent sadistically humiliating Roger in front of the other guests, something that unnerves Jack.

Trivia

• Roger isn't mentioned in the 1980 film, but the character being depicted in the gay liaison who is dressed in a bear costume may be a throwback to this scene, Wendy is the one who witnesses the sexual activity between the two men in the film.
