Design[]
The Shining (book)[]
Based on The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, the hotel's exterior used in the 1977 novel The Shining, is built in Colonial Revival style.
The Shining (film)[]
The hotel's exterior in the 1980 film version is based on the Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Oregon and was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression. A four-story structure, comprising approximately 40,000 square feet, the hotel was dedicated on September 28, 1937, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and was built using heavy rubble masonry, using boulders from the immediate area, to create the ground-level exterior walls, and heavy timber from the first floor up.
Only the establishing shot of the film, where the hotel's exterior is shown in full from above, was filmed at the Timberline Lodge. The remainder of shots of the facade were filmed in Britain using a full scale recreation of the hotel's exterior. Film director Stanley Kubrick had a life-size fake exterior framed using two parts of the original building as a guide.
Before the life-size model was created, a small-scale diorama was designed in order to establish a usable scale.
The Shining (miniseries)[]
The 1997 miniseries was filmed on location at The Stanley Hotel in order to keep aboard with Stephen King's original vision of the hotel.
The Shining (opera)[]
The operatic version of The Shining uses a version of the hotel's exterior based on The Stanley Hotel.
Filming Locations[]
In the 1980 film, exteriors were filmed on the backlot of Elstree Studios, with establishing shots done at the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon.
